You have had kids. You know what it takes to carry a pregnancy. But maybe you’re wondering: Can I still be a surrogate if my past pregnancy was not perfect?
The short answer: Possibly. It depends on a few important factors. At Simple Steps, we work with women who have had all types of birth experiences. What matters most is your overall health, recovery, and how your care team views your medical history.
Let’s break it down.
Can I Be a Surrogate After a C-Section?
Yes, many surrogates have delivered by C-section. It is not an automatic disqualifier. There are a few things we look for:
- A healthy recovery from the C-section
- No history of uterine rupture
- No complications with healing or multiple prior C-sections
If you have questions about long-term recovery or what additional pregnancies might mean for you, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists offers a clear overview of what to expect after a C-section. Reviewing this guide can help you and your care team decide whether another pregnancy is a safe next step.
If you have had more than two C-sections, we may ask for additional records or consult with a physician. Our top priority is your safety and ensuring your body is ready for another healthy pregnancy.
“I had two C-sections before I became a surrogate. I was open with the team, and they helped me feel completely confident moving forward.” – Jamie, past surrogate
What If I Had Pregnancy Complications Before?
Not all complications are the same. Having experienced one does not automatically rule you out.
Here’s how we generally approach it:
Conditions That May Require a Closer Look:
- Gestational diabetes managed with diet
- Anemia or low iron levels
- Morning sickness or nausea
Conditions That May Affect Surrogacy Eligibility:
- Severe preeclampsia or eclampsia
- Preterm labor before 34 weeks
- Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR)
- Placenta previa or placental abruption
- Three or more C-sections
- More than 5 total births
We will work with your OB or maternal-fetal medicine doctor to understand your unique history. You are never judged. You are always supported.
Why These Health Factors Matter
Surrogacy involves IVF, fertility medications, and a full medical screening process. Your body needs to be able to safely support a pregnancy. This is for your health and for the baby you will carry.
We also want to be sure you feel empowered and emotionally ready to take this journey again. That is especially important if your previous pregnancy was physically or mentally tough.
What Happens During the Medical Screening?
Once you complete your application, we will ask for:
- Your previous pregnancy and delivery records
- Lab work and blood pressure screening
- A uterine ultrasound to check the lining and shape
- A full health history, including surgeries or chronic conditions
You will also meet with a mental health professional to talk about your past experiences and your goals for this journey.
You Deserve the Full Picture
We believe every potential surrogate deserves clarity, respect, and medical guidance that puts her first. If you have had a C-section or pregnancy complication, that does not mean your journey ends here.
We are happy to talk through your experience and help you decide what is right for you.
